Olympic Games

Posted in Sports  by Z_man on Jan 30, 2010

If you have spent to much time in the model’s chat rooms and have not heard:

the Winter Olympics start in 13 days!

The 2010 Olympic Winter Games are being held in beautiful Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, which is just about 3 hours north of Seattle, Washington if you did not know.  Vancouver is the third largest Canadian city, and the largest port city on the North American West Coast.  The city is surrounded by water on three sides, and mountains of the Coast Mountain Range.    I have found a list of fun facts that I wanted to share with you as you prepare yourself for some winter sports action.

- The 2010 Olympic Winter Games are the 1st held by the province of British Columbia.

- There will be two official languages of the 2010 Olympic Games English and French, as much of Canada, there are also the two official languages of the International Olympic Committee.

- More than 80 countries and about 2,500 total athletes will be competing in the Olympic games.  About 220 of these are United States athletes.

- Basically 7 sports, Skiing, Bobsleigh, Curling, Skating (speed and figure), Hockey, Luge, and Snowboarding will present 86 medal events.

- More than 600 gold, silver and bronze medals have been cast with each one weighing over 1 pound.  And no two medals are alike.

- At the 2006 Winter Games in Torino, the U.S. Olympic Team won 25 medals: 9 gold, 9 silver and 7 bronze.  It also marked the first time the U.S. Team won a medal in curling, a sport VERY popular in Canada.

- The first medal will be awarded in men’s ski jumping on Feb. 13.  The last medal will be handed out in men’s hockey on Feb 28th.

- These game will be “Green” with an estimated 85% of waste from the Olympic Games being diverted from landfills to be reused, recycled or converted to energy.

- The Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay is the longest relay ever held within the borders of the host country.  The Olympic Flame is going to visit more than 1,000 communities and have over 12,000 torchbearers carry it on a nearly 28,000 – mile journey.

- Ski cross was added as a winter sport to be contested for the 1st time in these 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

- The hockey rink at the Canada Hockey Place will be the first National Hockey League-sized rink used in Olympic competition, as opposed to the international sized rink that is some 13 feet wider.

Soapy’s Game Reviews! This week: Bayonetta

Posted in Geekisms and Gadgets, Model Posts  by Soapy_Meadows on Jan 29, 2010

Back at the beginning of the PS2 era, the action game genre was revolutionized by a game that formed out of scraped ideas for Resident Evil 4. That game would be called Devil May Cry and has become a classic that will be remembered for years to come. The series then had a few sequels (the 2nd of which was trashed by fans, while the 3rd was hailed as one of the greatest action games of all time and the 4th is a mixed bag for fans) and the creator of them, Hideki Kamiya, has created other series most of which have done quite well. Viewtiful Joe and Okami are two of my favorites, so it’s easy to see why I was excited about his latest work, Bayonetta. But did it live up to expectations? Lets find out in my review of Bayonetta for the PS3 and X Box 360.

So I wont go too much into detail about the story itself, because honestly I’m still confused after beating the game. But I don’t think that makes it any less enjoyable. You see the story itself seems to be more of a way to create insane senarios for our Heroine, Bayonetta, to deal with in her own unique way. The game feels almost like a satire of the action genre, with overly sexual themes and the kind of over the top action that makes riding a missle like a surf board seem like an every day occurance. The cutscenes are very well thought out though and the voice acting is very decent. The basics of the story? Bayonetta is a witch, she uses guns on her hands and feet, and she brutally destroys the angels that are trying to kill her with her hair that can morph into giant hands and monster heads, and because she is also wearing this hair as a suit, when she uses it to attack she gets more and more naked… Makes sense? Nope. Is it awesome? Very awesome.

The better your attack the more naked she gets! How awesomely perverted.

But this is an action game, so the story takes a back seat to the gameplay. Lucky for us the gameplay in this game is top notch action from start to finish. Whether you are fighting one of the smaller angels or attempting to conquor a giant cardinal whos size makes you feel like you’re fighting a sky scraper at times, the game flows quite nicely. Something unique to this game is you can equip weapons to both your hands and your feet, and there is a variety of weapons to choose from, ranging from a Katana to a whip to ice skates to shot guns for your feet, and all of them are fun to use.

The action plays similarily to the Devil May Cry series, you have a bunch of enemies around you and you use a series of attacks and dodging (lots of dodging) to get through the hordes. The bosses are challenging but also very fun to beat. Just learn their patterns and dodge at the right times, and you will come out on top. Bayonetta also has a few unique abilities that are useful in certain situations. In battle she can use something called Witch time which allows her to slow time down and get in a few extra hits on the enemies. She also at certain points in the game, has the ability to “witch walk” which allows her to walk on walls and the ceiling. When this mechanic is used its used very well, I just wish it had been utalized more. She also has the ability to morph into a panther and a bird that can glide, which will come in handy at certain points in the game. On top of that, there is a magic gague that, if you fill up enough, will allow you to use torture attacks which will do massive damage to enemies and look pretty to boot. Bayonetta will pull out a torture device, like a guillotin, and you’ll be prompted to mash a button to rack up points, and then you’ll get to see the enemies die painfully. Bosses also have something similar called a climax move, where bayonetta will summon a giant monster (using her weird magic hair) and the monster will proceed to destroy the boss in fun and different ways.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kDKlSmM7PEE (here’s a gameplay video, I’ll do this properly when I find out how to)

The game offers a lot for you to do in game, and since it is an action game you will likely be playing through this more then once. There are multiple difficulties, very easy, easy, normal, hard, and non stop climax mode (did I mention this game has a very sexual theme?) as well as secret weapons, extra costumes, and even an extra character to play the game as. On top of that you’ll want to buy all of the accessories that allow Bayonetta to do different things like deflect attacks and activate witch time when you get hit, as well as all the ablilites and the health and magic upgrades. But we’re not done yet, within some of the stages you can find pieces of hearts that will raise your vitality, pearls that will raise your magic more, and portals that will lead you into special challenges. These challenges are definitely challenging and will test your abilities as a player, but the rewards are again, heart pieces and pearl pieces, so to max yourself out you are going to want to beat them. You can also try to get the best ranking in the levels and post your scores on a leader board for the world to see. And if that wasn’t enough for you, there is also a secret boss. So if you want to collect everything you will be at it for a long time, and that’s the way an action game should be.

Bayonetta posing for the camera! She does that a lot

Now the question you might be asking is, which version is superior? There has been quite an uproar of hate from PS3 fans due to the lazy port of this game, which consisted of worse load times and not as crisp graphics when compared to its 360 counterpart. Lucky for us PS3 owners, a patch has been released for the game that will fix the load times by letting you install the game. The graphics still take a hit but even with that considered the game looks very good on either system. So whichever system you prefer to play action games on really is the right choice for you, though there is still no denying that the 360 version is superior.

Overall this game is an amazing action game and a must have for all fans of the genre, especially fans of the Devil May Cry series. Fans of Hideki Kamiya’s games will also be pleased with the random references to his older games which definitely gave this reviewer a smile. The game is very stylistic in its music, tone, and art direction (though I hope you like the song Fly Me To The Moon because you’ll hear it a lot) and it’s a joy to see the crazy things Bayonetta does just for the sake of it looking awesome. The action is probably some of the best I’ve ever seen in a game, the story is non sensical in all the right ways, and you will find yourself coming back to this game again and again to try to unlock everything. The game is very hard, especially on the higher difficulties, but if you’re up for getting your ass kicked repeatedly only to feel the sweet satisfaction when you do win (and it is sweet) then give this gem a try.

Soapy’s Final Verdict: 9/10

The State of the Union as told by Jack Bauer

Posted in Politics / Current Events  by falken_foreal on Jan 26, 2010

I only have a thousand words, so let’s get right to it.  If I were Jack Bauer, and he were president, the following would occur in real time.

My fellow Americans, an attack on our nation’s soil was narrowly averted by quick-thinking heroes on board flight 253 on Christmas Day.  The terrorist, now identified as Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, was captured and interrogated for a full fifty minutes before being read his miranda rights.  Some of you will say that fifty minutes is less than sufficient time to learn everything someone in this individual’s position knows.  There’s the time it takes to feel out the suspect to see if he can be believed.  All the provided information then has to be verified, studied, and follow-up questions need to be formulated, asked, and answered before this process repeats until the interrogators are satisfied the suspect has provided all the actionable intelligence he has to provide.  Surely, there’s no way all of this can be accomplished in a mere fifty minutes, can it?  If I, Jack Bauer, spent fifty minutes interrogating every possible terror link, I’d never get anything done. For crissakes, he chemical burned his own balls.  As far as anyone at CTU is concerned, this guy practically interrogated himself.  Of course, no one at CTU, myself included, is ever held accountable for our actions the next day, and we don’t answer to an attorney general who’d rather try terrorists in civil courts than military tribunals.

More recently, however, a domestic threat to our very way of life was narrowly diverted by the timely election of the newest senator from Massachusetts, Scott Brown.  The Republican Party’s handsome companion represents the necessary forty-first vote to block the super-majority of the Democrats in the senate.  Pending bills like health care reform, cap and trade, and another stimulus package are no longer in play.  But, judicial nominees, the fate of the Guantanamo detainees, and even Time’s Man of the Year could now be up in the air.  All the recent talk of reconciliation is just a distraction.  Someone will be made to pay for the majority party’s troubles this year and soon.  Nancy Pelosi could be targeted sometime Friday afternoon.    House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer may be planning to be introduced quietly as her replacement as Speaker of the House as part of an effort to refocus on job creation, the economy, and bringing bipartisanship back to congress.  Chloe O’Brien is also available to fill in as Acting Speaker, if need be.

This speech isn’t over yet and there is one more threat to be addressed.  A bill before the senate would allow the president to nationalize college tuition.  Currently, the existing federal financial aid program makes up eighty percent of all tuition.  College tuition is out of control because the government subsidizes it.  Colleges and universities, “Big Education,” don’t care what people are willing to pay for continuing education because the United States government has promised to make up the difference between what people can afford and what Big Ed is willing to charge.  The result of this is that students end up owing thousands of dollars before they have the ability to repay their debt.  By nationalizing this process, banks are removed making parents and students directly indebted to their federal government.  Now, there is a windfall profit tax that is supposed to keep Big Ed honest, but that tax only applies to differences in interest rates.  If the cost of a semester at Harvard is twenty grand, and the interest rate on that money goes from two to three percent, the government is going to take that additional one percent of interest as a windfall profit tax.  One lousy percent of interest.  The real issue is why a school with 26 billion in untaxed endowments can keep twenty grand in taxpayer money for a single semester of school.  For the record, that would make Harvard the eighty-eighth richest nation in the world.  They’d be eighty-first if they hadn’t lost eleven billion in the market last year.

In most industries, and Big Ed is a very profitable industry, businesses offer a cash discount because they’d rather have payment up front directly from the consumer so they can reinvest it as soon as possible.  But in Big Ed’s case, universities and colleges stand to lose money by dealing directly with the consumer.  Consumers want to know what they’re getting for their money.  Banks don’t care about the purpose of the loan because they’re only interested in profiting from the rate of interest.  This administration has determined that they can turn a profit by cutting out the bank’s involvement and allowing these colleges and universities to write the loans themselves using federal tax money as collateral.  The plan is to have the government turn a profit by collecting interest on the payments.  This is where the windfall profit tax comes in: it’s only there to ensure the government turns a higher profit than the schools themselves.

Imagine the government holding a lien against your parents’ home because they cosigned your tuition.  Or that no bank will give you a mortgage because you owe so much unsecured debt to the government that the bank doesn’t want to risk a dispute over the rights to the value of the property should you default on your student loans.  If you go to college, and have kids who you help send to college, expect to be indebted to the federal government for most of your adult life.

Here’s the Secretary of Education’s op-ed in the Wall Street Journal laying out his argument for this new program.  He’s right about giving eighty-seven billion to banks over ten years.  There’s no reason for  federal tax dollars to be allocated to guarantee private institutions lending to individuals.  But when I put it that way, his alternative is to allocate however much federal money is requested by private institutions to guarantee loans made to individuals.

And just like every hour of my day, we end on a cliffhanger.
