Hell no, we won’t go!

Posted in Politics / Current Events  by Cpike on Nov 17, 2009

The Adult Video News (AVN) trade magazine reprinted an article by Larry Flint that was posted on Huffington Post over the summer in which he offers his analysis of the recent actions by President Obama and his decisions of late to support his advisers concerning the banking industry.

Many liberals have criticized Obama’s attempts at focusing solely on the financial sector as opposed to a more balanced approach on both Wall Street as well as Main Street. The figures showing a marked improvement in the stock market have been offset by news of increasing unemployment numbers with no end in sight.

This “jobless recovery” as leading economists refer to it, will continue to worsen because the Wall Street gains were brought about by dealing in price speculation, abstract debt and potential economic forecasts rather than real profits and losses by businesses. Much of the same thing took place prior to the original crash late last year.

Flynt, while supportive of Obama, doesn’t feel that he’s done enough to right the economic ship of state, choosing instead to surround himself with the same financial insiders who advised Bush and his Treasury Secretary, Hank Paulson. Flynt’s concerns mirror others in the progressive community who have called for the administration to 1) bring the CEO’s who were in charge of the disaster into account 2) end expensive bonuses for the staff of companies who took federal bailout money and 3) enact another stimulus package geared toward infrastructure projects and assistance to state and local governments who are becoming overburdened by the rise in unemployment and the subsequent need for social services.

The answer to these issues, Flynt believes, is for the everyday people this crisis is affecting the most to take to the streets like they did in the 20’s and 30’s to protest the lack of government action. Yes, he’s calling for a national strike in order to accomplish:

Real campaign-finance reform and strong restrictions on lobbying. Because nothing will change until we take corporate money out of politics. Nothing will improve until our politicians are once again answerable to their constituents, not the rich and powerful.

Additionally, he’s also calling on a mass consumer boycott, urging people to not buy anything on whatever date they decide to stage the protest. While this could certainly be a powerful sight and action to commit to, it’s also one of the most impractical ones and would be bound to fail if even attempted.

Why? Two big reasons. First, Flynt doesn’t seem to grasp that the culture in the 20’s and 30’s that allowed for mass protests to occur doesn’t exist anymore. Sure there are pockets of communities that support each other, but the middle and lower classes in America have fallen victim to the same “You get yours, I’ll get mine” mentality that pervades the upper class and helped propel them to success.

Probably the biggest motivating factor that made these protests effective was the sense of unity and camaraderie citizens felt for one another and the knowledge that they were all part of something larger. While that kind of grassroots, bottom-up approach is still in existence today, it’s no where near as cohesive or reliable as it once was. Think about how long and hard the 1999 WTO protests in Seattle were to manage and orchestrate and how many times you’ve seen that level of organization since.

Secondly, mass consumer boycotts don’t work. One need look no further than Buy Nothing Day, a anti-consumption protest scheduled every Black Friday, to see this is true. People literally don’t know how not to spend. We, as a culture, have made pain-free shopping practically a science now. Buy all you want and the pain will come…someday.

And even then it’s possible to keep putting it off and off and off. Or at least it was until the bottom fell out of the economy because too many people were financing their debt on housing bubbles and false hope.

The only examples in recent memory of boycotts working are ones that have been very focused with a great deal of organizational and strategic planning behind it. The “Dump Glenn Beck” advertiser boycott carried out by Color of Change after Beck’s remarks referring to President Obama as a racist is a superb example of punishing a corporate entity (Fox News) by going after its advertising base for a specific show based upon actions by the host of that show. There were no protests in the streets, just an intense, focused effort on a specific list of advertisers to pull away from a single show in order to avoid the threat of action against themselves.

So you see why what Flynt is proposing is a intriguing, yet wholly impractical idea. We’re not the people we were 70 years ago. If progressives want to effectively pressure Obama to act on the promises of his campaign, they’re are going to need a better, more modern strategy that appeals to both those who can appreciate the threat they face as well as those who are open to being convinced of it.

Almost heaven … Mashed Potatoes

Posted in Randomness  by Mikey70 on Nov 16, 2009

Hey guys and gals! So, you all know that I like to work in the occasional food blog every now and then. With Thanksgiving … the greatest food holiday of them all … right around the corner, I figured it’s time for another. Now the roast turkey, the stuffing, and all your traditional Thanksgiving foods are great. But, for my money, the real key to the Thanksgiving dinner is the mashed potatoes. The perfect “mashed taters and gravy” turns your ordinary Thanksgiving into an extraordinary one! Here’s what you’ll need:

4 Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and diced
1.5 sticks of butter
.5 cup heavy cream
Salt and pepper
Pinch of Nutmeg

So, to start add the potatoes to a large pot of boiling water along with a dash of salt and pepper.  Let the potatoes cook for about 10-12 minutes.  Do not overcook the potatoes or let them get too soft.  Remember that nothing is ever any good if it gets too soft.  Drain the potatoes and let them cool for a minute or two in a large bowl.  Now comes the fun part!  With a potato masher get in there and mash ‘em up. Don’t be timid.  Grind it in there and pound them … don’t be afraid to get a bit on your hands and fingers.  Nothing wrong with getting a bit messy and sticky!  Mash ‘em up until almost all of the lumps are gone.  At the same time, place the butter and the cream into a sauce pan and warm on the stove until the butter is completely melted.  While stirring the potatoes, slowly add the butter/cream mixture.  This is the important part, because you want to get everything nice and warm and creamy.  Creamy is very good, we all know that.  Once the butter and cream has been completely mixed in add another dash of salt and pepper to taste.  If you want to add a little extra spice, stir in the nutmeg.  Now your mashed potatoes are ready to go!  Serve then up with your turkey and some yummy pan gravy, and your Thanksgiving meal is perfection!

Can Crutches be Sexy?

Posted in Model Posts  by Rose on Nov 16, 2009

So, It’s been a loooooonnnng, but good weekend. I spent most of the weekend in rehearsal and by the end of the weekend I was super sore, and ready to relax and party! So last night, I totally went out to my friend’s house (she’s going to jail tomorrow cause she forgot to show up for her court date for a DUI she got a month ago) and I was helping her pick up the back yard to get rid of some bottles and cans. Silly me, I was barefoot, stepped on a piece of broken glass, and was bleeding all over the place at 2 in the morning!

So after cleaning it up, gluing it shut, and getting a shoe on (better late than never I guess) I hobbled to student health, (cant put weight on my left foot, so it took me 20 minutes to park and walk maybe half a block!) and got myself a pair of crutches! Hopefully I’ll be able to dance on it by Saturday! Until then though, I’ll just have to be super sexy, on my bed, without putting weight on my foot!

As for my friend, I’m trying to raise money to help post bail for her, so please please please let me give you a vip show or make you a video! Between my gimpy leg, and one of my best friends being in jail, and the nasty rainy weather we’re having here, I need someone to brighten my day!! hello boys

Tayte

Phew, what a crazy week!

Posted in Model Posts  by Tayte on Nov 16, 2009

I was gone for a few days, but I’m back! I just got home from LA, spent my whole afternoon driving. I had so much fun visiting some of the ladies, Evelyn being one of them.

So much delicious food in LA, for the vegan tummy. I enjoyed all of it very much, yum. I ate a vegan version of a pulled pork bbq sandwich and it may have been an orgasm in my mouth. I am totally going back there for more next time, yum!

I hate driving long distances, but I made sure to roll the windows down and sing along to my music at the top of my lungs, haha.

Now that I’m back, I’m frisky as ever, looking forward to chatting with all of you in the coming week, I’ll be on every night around 7pm PST to Midnight. Stay tuned for an extra special video in the VIP section as well.

Til next time!

-Tayte

Lil guy!

Posted in Model Posts  by Brooke on Nov 13, 2009

I am loving my new lil puppy. Although I’m sure he wont be little for very long.  Last weekend I took a drive (almost 14 hours!) to pick up a full breed German Shephard. Ohh he is SO stinking cute, and smart! This is my first puppy, so I’m learning as I go, but so far so good! He has been pretty great so far. I’m calling him Lil guy until I determine what I’m going to put on his papers. Suggestions?  The poor thing is still crying at night, it takes ALL I have not to let him get in bed with me. hehe. I keep reminding myself that even though he is cute and cuddly now, when he is 90lbs it wont be so much fun! (and what about when I want to share my bed with someone! I cant have that problem hehe)

So I have been SO super busy with my other job, and the puppy I just havent been around much. I’m hoping to change that this next week, we’ve got alot of catching up to do! See you in pchats soon loves!
